Bob Newhart

Bob Newhart (1929–2024) built his comedy around pauses, restraint and the suspicion that the person on the other end of the telephone was making no sense at all. Born George Robert Newhart in Oak Park, Illinois, he worked as an accountant and advertising copywriter before recordings of his absurd one-sided conversations led to a contract with Warner Bros. in 1959. His first album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, reached number one on the Billboard charts and won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best New Artist. The routines established the approach he carried into acting: Newhart was often the calm figure in the room, listening carefully while everyone around him supplied the chaos. Television gave that style room to breathe. On The Bob Newhart Show, he played psychologist Bob Hartley opposite Suzanne Pleshette, anchoring six seasons with a low-key delivery that never needed to chase a joke. He found another durable role in Newhart as Vermont innkeeper and television host Dick Loudon. The series ran for eight seasons and ended by reconnecting Dick with Bob Hartley in a celebrated dream reveal featuring Pleshette. Newhart’s film work showed how naturally his voice and timing could fit into an ensemble. His credits included the war satire Catch-22, the comedy Cold Turkey and the musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. As Bernard in Disney’s The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under, his gently anxious delivery became part of the character. Later appearances included In & Out, Elf and Horrible Bosses. He also remained a welcome television presence well beyond his own sitcoms, taking dramatic and comic guest roles in ER, NCIS and Desperate Housewives. As former science-show host Professor Proton on The Big Bang Theory, he won a Primetime Emmy Award and continued the role through the series’ final season and on Young Sheldon. Across stand-up, film, voice acting and television, Newhart’s great tool was composure: the quieter he became, the more closely audiences listened.
