Bob Geldof

Bob Geldof is best known as a musician and political activist, but acting and film performance also form part of a career that has rarely stayed within one lane. Born on October 5, 1951, and brought up in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin, he developed a public persona marked by directness, restless energy and a willingness to provoke—qualities that naturally carried beyond the concert stage and into his screen work. Before becoming widely recognised, Geldof held a string of jobs in England and later worked as a music journalist for The Georgia Straight in Vancouver. He also briefly guest-hosted the Canadian children’s television programme Switchback, an early indication of the ease with which he could move between music, broadcasting and performance. After returning to Ireland in 1975, Geldof became lead singer of the Boomtown Rats, a rock group closely connected to the punk movement. Their 1978 single “Rat Trap” became the first new-wave song to top the UK chart. Geldof’s forceful interviews and confrontational television appearances made him more than simply the group’s frontman: he became a distinctive public presence, capable of turning an appearance into an event. He left the Boomtown Rats in 1986 to begin a solo career and publish his autobiography, Is That It? His solo work included “This Is the World Calling,” co-written with Dave Stewart, and “The Great Song of Indifference.” He has also performed with artists including David Gilmour and the surviving members of Queen. Geldof’s career has continued to combine music, writing, broadcasting, acting and campaigning. Since 2000, he has devoted substantial time to debt-relief campaigning for developing countries alongside Bono, including organising the Live 8 concerts. Whether appearing as an actor, musician or outspoken interview subject, Geldof brings the same unmistakably unvarnished quality to the screen.
