Bob Barker

Bob Barker spent more than half a century turning a clear voice, quick timing and easy command of an audience into a remarkable television career. Born in Darrington, Washington, in 1923, he spent much of his youth on South Dakota’s Rosebud Indian Reservation. U.S. Indian Census Rolls listed him as a citizen of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, a connection the tribe later publicly confirmed. After joining the United States Navy Reserve during World War II and training as a fighter pilot, Barker returned to Drury College and completed a degree in economics. Broadcasting soon became his direction. Early radio work in Missouri and Florida led him to California, where The Bob Barker Show ran for six years. His voice and audience-friendly style caught the attention of game-show producer Ralph Edwards, opening the door to the work that would define Barker’s public image. He hosted Truth or Consequences from 1956 to 1975, then began his long run on the CBS revival of The Price Is Right in 1972. Barker stayed with the show until 2007 and also took on executive producer duties after 1988. His approach was controlled without feeling stiff: he could keep a complicated television machine moving while still making contestants seem like the center of the moment. He returned to the program three times after retiring, with his final surprise appearance coming in 2015. Barker’s acting work often made clever use of that familiar television persona. His best-known movie appearance came in the 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore, playing himself opposite Adam Sandler and overturning his mild-mannered image with an extended fight scene. He also appeared as himself in shows including The Nanny, Futurama and How I Met Your Mother, while taking character roles in Bonanza and SpongeBob SquarePants. Beyond hosting, acting and television production, Barker was associated with animal rights advocacy. He died in 2023, leaving a screen career shaped by longevity, composure and a willingness to have some fun with the public’s expectations of him.
