Birol Ünel was a Turkish-German actor whose work moved between theatre, film and television, with a screen career defined above all by the emotional force of his performance in Fatih Akin’s Head-On. Born in Silifke, Mersin, in southern Turkey, on 18 August 1961, Ünel moved with his family to Brinkum near Bremen in 1968. He later studied acting at the Musikhochschule Hannover and began his career in theatre. At Berlin’s Tacheles, he took the lead in Caligula and also directed the production, an early indication that his interests extended beyond simply appearing on stage. Ünel made his film debut in The Passenger in 1988. Roles in Dealer, where he played a private detective, and Akin’s In July helped establish his screen career, but Head-On gave him the part with which he became most closely associated. As Cahit Tomruk, an alcoholic drawn into a turbulent relationship, Ünel found international recognition. The film won the Golden Bear at the 2004 Berlin International Film Festival, while Ünel received the German Film Award for Best Actor for his performance. His later work included the Turkish film Hırsız Var!, Transylvania, Seven Heroes and another collaboration with Akin, Soul Kitchen. Across these films, Ünel’s career resisted a neat division between German and Turkish cinema, reflecting the Turkish-German identity through which he was widely described. His later years were marked by alcoholism, homelessness and declining career opportunities. Ünel died in a Berlin hospital on 3 September 2020, aged 59, after suffering from cancer. His body of work remains centred on a demanding stage background and a film performance in Head-On that brought him both major recognition and a leading acting prize.
