Billy Joel is far better known at a piano than on a movie screen, but his rare acting work draws on the same qualities that shaped his music: a recognisable voice, a sharp sense of character and an unmistakably New York point of view. Born in New York City on May 9, 1949, Joel moved with his family to Hicksville on Long Island when he was one. He began piano lessons at four and pursued music professionally as a teenager, first with groups including the Echoes, the Hassles and Attila, then as a solo singer-songwriter. His career took its defining turn with Piano Man in 1973, whose title track became his signature song. Albums including The Stranger, 52nd Street, Glass Houses, The Nylon Curtain, An Innocent Man, Storm Front and River of Dreams established a body of work spanning piano-led ballads, pop, rock, R&B and doo-wop influences. Joel’s principal screen performance came in the 1988 animated film Oliver & Company. He voiced Dodger, a sarcastic Jack Russell inspired by the Artful Dodger from Charles Dickens. The character was designed with elements of Joel’s contemporary image, including Wayfarer sunglasses, and gave him room to bring some streetwise musical personality to the part. Joel also performed Dodger’s song, “Why Should I Worry?”, making the role feel less like an unrelated acting detour than a compact extension of his established persona. That remains an unusual entry in a career built mainly through songwriting, recording and live performance. Joel was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, while his long association with Madison Square Garden eventually included a monthly residency that began in 2014 and concluded in July 2024. His screen filmography may be brief, but Oliver & Company found a fitting use for what audiences already knew: Billy Joel could make a character vivid through phrasing, attitude and a song.
