Billy Connolly

Billy Connolly’s route to the screen was anything but conventional. Born in Glasgow on 24 November 1942, he served an apprenticeship as a boilermaker in the city’s shipyards, an environment where he absorbed what he later called the merciless character of Glasgow humour. Music offered another direction: he learned banjo, entered the folk-club circuit and formed the Humblebums, first with Tam Harvey and later with Gerry Rafferty. Comedy gradually took over. The humorous introductions in Connolly’s live sets grew longer until the stories became the main event, leading to a solo career built around his loose, observant and unmistakably Scottish delivery. A 1975 appearance on Parkinson brought him to a much wider television audience, while later stand-up specials and travel series carried that personality well beyond the stage. As an actor, Connolly has often made the most of his combination of warmth, mischief and rough-edged authority. He voiced Ben in Pocahontas and brought suitable pirate-world disorder to Muppet Treasure Island as Billy Bones. His performance opposite Judi Dench as John Brown in Mrs Brown showed a more restrained dramatic side and earned nominations from BAFTA, BAFTA Scotland and the Screen Actors Guild. His later film work ranged freely across genres. He appeared in The Last Samurai and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, played Wilf in Dustin Hoffman’s Quartet and voiced King Fergus in Pixar’s Scotland-set Brave. In The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, he took on the role of the formidable dwarf warrior Dáin II Ironfoot. Whether heard through an animated king or seen charging into a fantasy battlefield, Connolly’s presence remains grounded in the same qualities that shaped his comedy: a strong sense of character, a storyteller’s timing and Glasgow never far from the surface. Connolly published his autobiography, Windswept and Interesting, in 2021 and received the BAFTA Fellowship in 2022, recognising a career spanning five decades.
