Billy Campbell

Billy Campbell has built a screen career around an unusual balance: the ease of a traditional leading man paired with a willingness to play troubled, threatening and morally complicated characters. Born on July 7, 1959, in Charlottesville, Virginia, Campbell moved to Chicago intending to study at the American Academy of Art College before turning toward acting, with classes at the Ted Liss Studio and the Second City Training Center. After early television appearances in Hotel and Family Ties, Campbell landed his first lead role as Luke Fuller on the fifth season of Dynasty. He followed it with a regular part as Detective Joey Indelli on Crime Story and later guest-starred as the title character in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Outrageous Okona.” His defining early film role came in 1991, when he played the title hero in The Rocketeer opposite Jennifer Connelly. Campbell brought an earnest, straight-ahead quality to the adventure, then shifted into gothic territory as Texan vampire hunter Quincey Morris in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. His television work continued to cover broad ground, including Moon over Miami, Tales of the City and its two sequels, and the family drama Once and Again. His performance as Rick Sammler in the latter earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series. Campbell has often pushed against the clean-cut impression of his leading roles. In Enough, he played the abusive husband of Jennifer Lopez’s character, and he portrayed Ted Bundy in the television film The Stranger Beside Me. Later parts included Jordan Collier on The 4400, a prominent role in AMC’s The Killing and Abraham Lincoln in Killing Lincoln. From 2017 to 2020, Campbell starred in the Canadian crime drama Cardinal. His work brought him three consecutive Canadian Screen Awards for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Television Film. In 2024, he joined the 2025 reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, adding another genre project to a career that has moved comfortably between adventure, drama, science fiction and crime stories.
