Billy Boyd

Billy Boyd has built the kind of career that comfortably crosses film, television, theatre and music. Born in Glasgow in 1968, he worked as a bookbinder for six years before pursuing acting and graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Performances with St Andrews Repertory and the Traverse Theatre followed, giving his career firm roots on the Scottish stage. His early screen appearances included Taggart, The Soldier's Leap and Urban Ghost Story, but his breakthrough came as Peregrin “Pippin” Took in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Across the three films, released from 2001 to 2003, Boyd made Pippin his defining screen role. The part also allowed his acting and music to meet: he wrote the melody for and sang “The Edge of Night” in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Years later, he wrote and performed “The Last Goodbye” for the closing credits of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Boyd's other film work includes the dual role of Glen and Glenda in Seed of Chucky. He returned to that corner of horror comedy in 2022, appearing as the merged Glen and Glenda incarnation G.G. in the second-season finale of Chucky. His television work has also included a cameo in the Scottish comedy Still Game. Theatre has remained a steady part of Boyd's career. He played Banquo in Macbeth at Shakespeare's Globe in 2013 and returned to the stage in 2024 alongside fellow Lord of the Rings cast member Dominic Monaghan in a Canadian production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Music is more than a sideline for Boyd. He fronts the band Beecake, which released the albums Soul Swimming and Blue Sky Paradise as well as the EPs Please Stay and Just B. That combination of acting and music gives his career a distinctive shape: whether on screen, onstage or behind a microphone, Boyd has consistently moved between different forms of performance.
