Billy Bob Thornton

Billy Bob Thornton has built a career around characters who rarely seem polished, predictable or entirely safe. Born on August 4, 1955, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, he worked jobs ranging from roadie and sawmill worker to asphalt layer before pursuing music and acting. That varied background fits the grounded, lived-in quality he often brings to the screen. Thornton’s early film work included playing the villain in One False Move, which he also co-wrote. His defining creative breakthrough came with 1996’s Sling Blade. Thornton wrote, directed and starred in the independent drama, expanding a story first told in the short film Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade. The screenplay won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, while his performance earned a Best Actor nomination. The success of Sling Blade opened the way to an unusually broad run of roles. He played political strategist Richard Jemmons in Primary Colors, appeared in Armageddon and earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for A Simple Plan. In 2001 alone, he moved between Monster’s Ball, Bandits and The Man Who Wasn’t There. Bad Santa later made particularly sharp use of his ability to play abrasive, damaged men without sanding away their worst qualities. He also portrayed Davey Crockett in The Alamo and Coach Gary Gaines in Friday Night Lights. Television gave Thornton another strong stretch of morally complicated characters. He won a Golden Globe for playing hitman Lorne Malvo in Fargo, led Goliath as a washed-up, alcoholic lawyer and, since 2024, has starred in Landman as oil-company landman Tommy Norris. Acting is only one side of Thornton’s work. He has written, directed and produced films, worked as a voice actor, and maintained a parallel career as a singer, songwriter and musician. Whether he is behind a screenplay, at a microphone or playing someone with trouble close to the surface, Thornton’s work tends to favor rough edges over easy charm.
