Billie Whitelaw

Billie Whitelaw built a career around range, moving between theatre, film and television without becoming fixed to one kind of part. Born in Coventry in 1932 and raised in a working-class part of Bradford, she began performing on radio at 11. While still at school, she worked as an assistant stage manager and acted with the repertory company at Bradford’s Prince’s Theatre. Further repertory work followed before her London debut in 1950. Her film debut came in The Sleeping Tiger in 1954. Early British film roles often cast her as blondes and secretaries, but by the late 1960s the breadth of her acting was becoming much clearer. Charlie Bubbles brought her a BAFTA for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and she won a second BAFTA for playing the mother of Hayley Mills’s character in Twisted Nerve. Work in Gumshoe and Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy further established her place in British cinema of the period. For many viewers, Whitelaw’s defining screen role remains Mrs Baylock in The Omen. As the sinister guardian of Damien, she gave the film one of its most chilling performances and won the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Actress. Yet the variety elsewhere in her filmography is just as telling. She voiced Aughra in The Dark Crystal, played Mrs Hall in Maurice, appeared as a fiercely protective mother in The Krays, and took supporting roles in Jane Eyre and Quills. Her comedy turn as Joyce Cooper in Hot Fuzz showed that her precise, forceful presence could be funny as well as threatening. Television was another constant, from an early appearance in Dixon of Dock Green to The Sextet, which earned her a BAFTA for Best Actress. Across a screen career spanning more than five decades, Whitelaw repeatedly found the tension, humour or unease inside supporting roles, giving them far more weight than their size might suggest.
