Bill Zuckert

Bill Zuckert built the kind of career that rarely depended on being the name above the title. Born in the Bronx on December 18, 1915, the American actor became a steady presence across radio and television, bringing substance to roles that helped a story find its shape. Zuckert began his career in radio in 1941 and lent his voice to hundreds of dramas over the next two decades. Among his recurring work was Lieutenant Louis Parker in the NBC crime drama Crime and Peter Chambers. Radio demanded that performers establish character without the help of costume, expression or physical setting, and Zuckert’s long run in the medium formed the foundation of a career built on adaptable character work. He also served in New Guinea during World War II as a member of the Seabees, the United States naval construction force. Away from radio and television, his Broadway credits included Sixth Finger in a Five Finger Glove in 1956 and The Gang’s All Here in 1959. Television gave Zuckert a particularly long second act, with guest and character roles extending across the next half century. Gunsmoke used him three times in three different parts: Mr. Asper in “Quint Asper Comes Home” in 1962, Enoch in “I Call Him Wonder” in 1963 and Mr. Jacobson in “Deputy Festus” in 1965. In 1968, he appeared on Star Trek as Sheriff Johnny Behan in “Spectre of the Gun,” an episode that placed the Enterprise crew inside a surreal recreation of the American frontier. Zuckert’s professional life also extended beyond performance. He served on the boards of directors of both the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. By the time of his death in 1997, his career reflected the working character actor’s craft at its broadest: voice work, stage appearances and decades of television roles.
