Bill Smitrovich

Bill Smitrovich is an American actor whose work across television, film and voice acting has often drawn on a sturdy, authoritative screen presence. Born in Bridgeport on May 16, 1947, he became a familiar face through roles as detectives, police officers, military figures and government officials, bringing weight to characters who frequently operate inside complicated institutions. His first prominent television role came in the 1980s crime series Crime Story, where he played a detective. He was also the lead guest star in the pilot film for Miami Vice before starring in the drama Life Goes On from 1989 to 1993. Later television work included Seattle police lieutenant Bob Bletcher in Millennium, Inspector Cramer in A Nero Wolfe Mystery and Assistant District Attorney Kenneth Walsh in The Practice. He also had a recurring role on Without a Trace as Chief Alex Olcyk and played Vice President Raymond Jarvis in the 2010 NBC series The Event. Smitrovich’s television appearances extend well beyond those regular and recurring parts. His credits include the two-part Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Past Tense,” along with appearances in 24, Numb3rs, NYPD Blue, Touched by an Angel, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Criminal Minds, Castle and the Dynasty reboot. He also portrayed Alexander Haig in the 2003 miniseries The Reagans. His film work follows a similarly varied path. Smitrovich appeared in the Stephen King adaptation Silver Bullet, as well as Renegades, The Trigger Effect and Gridiron Gang. His run of military roles includes Independence Day, Air Force One, Thirteen Days, Fail Safe and Eagle Eye. He also appeared in Iron Man, played Mr. Zimburger in The Rum Diary and took the role of CIA head Hanley in The November Man. Across these projects, Smitrovich has built a career around making officials, commanders and working professionals feel immediately at home on screen.
