Bill Quinn

Bill Quinn built the kind of career that depends on making every part count. Born in New York City on May 6, 1912, he began working in films as a teenager and performed with touring stock theater companies during the 1920s. Around 1934, he moved into radio, later starring as a detective on ABC’s Little Herman and appearing on programs including Counterspy, Gangbusters, The FBI in Peace and War and Mr. District Attorney. That varied early experience prepared Quinn for a remarkably durable run as a character actor. Across seven decades, he accumulated more than 150 roles, moving from silent films in the 1920s to his final screen appearance in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier in 1989, where he played the father of Dr. McCoy. He was rarely the center of the story, but he became a familiar, dependable presence around it. Television gave Quinn recurring roles that made good use of his understated authority. He played Mr. Van Ranseleer, the wise, blind bar patron in Archie Bunker’s Place; Dr. Melnitz, Felix and Oscar’s dour physician in The Odd Couple; and bartender Frank Sweeney in The Rifleman. He also appeared as Mary’s father in three episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. His extensive guest work stretched from Perry Mason, Batman and Bewitched to Hawaii Five-O, The Waltons, The Rockford Files and Trapper John, M.D. Quinn’s film credits were similarly wide-ranging. He appeared in The Birds, The Reluctant Astronaut, The Shakiest Gun in the West, Hearts of the West, Gable and Lombard, Bustin’ Loose and Twilight Zone: The Movie. Taken together, those parts trace the career of an actor who could step into dramas, comedies, westerns and science fiction without needing to announce himself. Bill Quinn died in 1994, leaving behind a body of work defined less by stardom than by steady, adaptable craft.
