Bill Paterson

Bill Paterson has built the kind of career that moves comfortably between stage, film, television and radio. Born William Tulloch Paterson in Glasgow on 3 June 1945, he was raised in Dennistoun and first became interested in acting after a school trip to the Citizens Theatre in 1961. Before committing to the stage, he spent three years as a quantity surveyor’s apprentice and then attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. His professional debut came in 1967, alongside Leonard Rossiter in Bertolt Brecht’s The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui at the Glasgow Citizens Theatre. Paterson later became a founding member of John McGrath’s 7:84 theatre company, touring the United Kingdom and Europe before making his London debut with the company in 1976. Theatre remained an important thread throughout his career, from the original National Theatre production of Guys and Dolls to Death and the Maiden, Ivanov and Waiting for Godot. Paterson’s screen work has been just as varied. His early films included The Killing Fields, Comfort and Joy and A Private Function, all released in 1984. He later appeared in The Witches, Truly, Madly, Deeply, Chaplin, Richard III, Spice World, Bright Young Things, Miss Potter and Creation. That range—from period drama and literary adaptation to fantasy and broad comedy—has made him a dependable presence across very different kinds of stories. Television has offered some of his most widely recognised roles. He played Ally Fraser in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, Dr Douglas Monaghan in Sea of Souls, George Castle in Law & Order: UK and Professor Edwin Bracewell in Doctor Who. Later appearances included Ned Gowan in Outlander, the father of Fleabag and Claire in Fleabag, and Lord Lyman Beesbury in House of the Dragon. Paterson has also worked extensively as a narrator, including on The Repair Shop, bringing the same steady authority to voice work that has marked his long career on stage and screen.
