Bill Maher

Bill Maher has spent most of his screen career playing a version of himself: quick with a punchline, comfortable with disagreement and happiest when a conversation has some friction in it. Born in New York City on January 20, 1956, he was raised in River Vale, New Jersey, and studied English literature and history at Cornell University before beginning his career as a comedian and actor. Maher hosted the New York comedy club Catch a Rising Star in 1979 and began appearing on Johnny Carson’s and David Letterman’s shows in 1982. Acting remained part of his early career, with appearances in Ratboy, House II: The Second Story, Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, Newhart, Murder, She Wrote and Pizza Man. Those roles sit alongside a much larger body of work built around stand-up, topical comedy and television hosting. Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher gave that combination its defining format. Running first on Comedy Central and then ABC, the show paired Maher’s opening monologues with group discussions involving guests from politics, journalism, entertainment and popular culture. In 2003, he carried that approach to HBO as host, co-producer and co-writer of Real Time with Bill Maher. Its mix of current-events comedy, interviews and panel debate has kept his television identity closely tied to argument rather than performance in the conventional acting sense. His film work includes Religulous, the 2008 documentary made with director Larry Charles, which examines and spoofs religious extremism. Maher later became an executive producer of the HBO newsmagazine series Vice. In 2022, he launched Club Random, a podcast built around one-on-one conversations with guests and, by design, subjects beyond politics. Across these different formats, Maher’s central screen presence has stayed remarkably consistent: that of a comedian who treats conversation as both material and contest. His career belongs as much to the talk-show desk and discussion table as it does to the stage or movie screen.
