Bill Duke

Bill Duke has built a screen career around authority, intensity and a remarkable economy of movement. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1943, he received early instruction in performing arts and creative writing at Dutchess Community College. He later completed his B.A. after studying English education, dance and drama, then continued at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. In 1971, he appeared on Broadway in Melvin Van Peebles’s musical Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death. Movie audiences began to recognize Duke through Car Wash, where he played the fierce revolutionary Abdullah Mohammed Akbar. American Gigolo gave him a very different kind of threatening role, while Commando and Predator helped establish the imposing screen presence that would follow him through action and crime films. As Sergeant Mac Elliot in Predator, Duke brought pressure and emotional strain to a heavily armed ensemble. Menace II Society made particularly sharp use of his controlled delivery, casting him as an investigator who guides a suspect into contradicting himself during an interrogation. Duke’s filmography repeatedly finds him on one side of the law or the other. He played police chiefs in Action Jackson and Exit Wounds, corrupt law-enforcement figures in Bird on a Wire and Payback, and later appeared in films including X-Men: The Last Stand, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, Bad Country and Mandy. Even in supporting parts, his measured voice and watchful manner can give a scene additional weight. Acting is only one side of Duke’s career. After studying filmmaking at the AFI Conservatory, he moved into television direction with Knots Landing and went on to direct episodes of Dallas, Falcon Crest, Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice. His theatrical directing work includes A Rage in Harlem, Deep Cover, The Cemetery Club, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and Hoodlum. He also directed the documentaries Dark Girls and Light Girls. Across acting, directing and producing, Duke’s career reflects a filmmaker interested in power, pressure and the people navigating both.
