Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby, born in Philadelphia on July 12, 1937, built a wide-ranging career across stand-up, television, film, writing, music and production. His route into comedy began while bartending at a Philadelphia club, where making customers laugh proved more rewarding than simply serving drinks. Club appearances in Philadelphia and New York followed, and a 1964 appearance on The Tonight Show brought him national exposure. Cosby’s stand-up drew heavily on childhood memories and family life, delivered in a conversational, often deadpan style. That approach is captured in the 1983 concert film Bill Cosby: Himself, whose routines about marriage and parenting anticipated material later used in The Cosby Show. His screen career had already broken important ground with I Spy. Cast opposite Robert Culp in 1965, Cosby became the first African American to star in a weekly dramatic television series. He received three consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series during the show’s run. He later moved between sitcoms, children’s programming and film, appearing alongside Sidney Poitier in Uptown Saturday Night, Let’s Do It Again and A Piece of the Action. Education remained a recurring thread in his work. Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids grew from his Philadelphia childhood, while his doctoral dissertation examined the animated series as a teaching aid for elementary-school students. His greatest television success arrived in 1984 with The Cosby Show, which ran for eight seasons and placed his family-centered comedy at the heart of prime-time television. Any account of Cosby’s career must also acknowledge the sexual assault allegations that transformed how his work is viewed. Netflix canceled the planned special Bill Cosby 77 amid those allegations, and his last known stand-up appearance before his conviction took place in Philadelphia in January 2018. The result is a screen legacy whose historical influence and comedy cannot be discussed without the deeply troubling context that now surrounds them.
