Bill Cobbs

Bill Cobbs built a screen career around presence rather than showiness. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 16, 1934, he came to acting after eight years as a U.S. Air Force radar technician and jobs selling cars and working with office products. Reuben Silver helped him begin acting at Cleveland’s African American Performing Arts Center and Karamu House Theatre, where Cobbs appeared in Purlie Victorious. At 36, he moved to New York to pursue acting, supporting himself through cab driving, equipment repair, toy sales and other work. His first professional role came in Ride a Black Horse at the Negro Ensemble Company. After further work in small, regional and street theatre, Cobbs made his feature debut with a single line in The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. That modest entrance suited a career defined by making even limited screen time count. Cobbs became a familiar, steadying presence across films of striking variety. He played a bartender in Trading Places, appeared in The Brother from Another Planet and The Color of Money, and brought authority to supporting parts in New Jack City, The People Under the Stairs and Demolition Man. In The Hudsucker Proxy, he was the mysterious “clock man”; in That Thing You Do!, he played jazz pianist Del Paxton; and in Air Bud, he was coach and retired player Arthur Chaney. His other film work included The Bodyguard, Ghosts of Mississippi, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind and Get Low. For many viewers, Cobbs is especially recognizable as Reginald, the retiring security guard whose role takes an antagonistic turn in Night at the Museum. He later returned for Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. His television career was just as wide-ranging, with regular roles on I’ll Fly Away, The Gregory Hines Show, The Michael Richards Show and Go On, alongside appearances in series including ER, The Sopranos and Star Trek: Enterprise. In 2020, his performance in Dino Dana earned a Daytime Emmy Award. Cobbs, who died in 2024, left behind the kind of extensive career that rewards looking closely at the supporting cast.
