Bill Camp

Bill Camp is an American actor whose career has moved between the stage, film and television, with character roles becoming his particular territory. Born in Massachusetts on October 22, 1964, and raised in Groton, Camp attended the University of Vermont before leaving without a degree. He later graduated from the Juilliard School and began building much of his early career in theatre. Camp stepped away from acting in 2002, working for a time as a cook and mechanic. His return came two years later in Tony Kushner's Homebody/Kabul, a performance that earned him an Obie Award. Broadway remained an important part of his work, including productions of Heartbreak House, Death of a Salesman and The Crucible. His performance in the 2016 revival of The Crucible brought a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play. On film, Camp has assembled a varied list of supporting and character parts across historical drama, political drama, crime and comedy. His credits include Lincoln, 12 Years a Slave, Love & Mercy, Loving, Molly's Game, Vice, Wildlife, Dark Waters, Joker and The Kitchen. He later played funeral home owner Ray Loewen in The Burial and appeared in Sound of Freedom. Television has given Camp room to make equally substantial impressions. He appeared in Boardwalk Empire, The Good Wife and The Leftovers, and received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for The Night Of. He played FBI agent Bob Chesney in The Looming Tower, Mr. Shaibel in The Queen's Gambit and a significant supporting role in American Rust. In 2024, he appeared as Raymond Horgan in Presumed Innocent. He also became the narrator of Forensic Files II in 2020. Camp's career is not built around one defining part. Instead, it is shaped by the cumulative weight of theatre work and carefully placed screen roles across an unusually broad range of stories.
