Bibi Besch

Bibi Besch built a wide-ranging screen career across film, television and the stage, moving comfortably between daytime drama, primetime series, science fiction and sharply observed family stories. Born Bibiana Maria Köchert in Vienna in 1942, she moved to the United States with her mother, theater actress Gusti Huber, and her sister after World War II. She later took the surname of her stepfather, radio executive and former U.S. Army captain Joseph Besch. Much of Besch’s early television experience came through New York-based daytime soap operas. She appeared in The Edge of Night, Love Is a Many Splendored Thing and Somerset before becoming a familiar presence across primetime television. Her credits included Dynasty, Dallas, Falcon Crest and Knots Landing, alongside guest appearances in series as varied as The Rockford Files, The Golden Girls, Murder, She Wrote and It’s Garry Shandling’s Show. For movie audiences, Besch is closely associated with Dr. Carol Marcus in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. As an early love of Admiral James T. Kirk, Carol gave the film a more personal connection to Kirk’s past amid its larger science-fiction conflict. Besch’s film work also stretched from Meteor and The Beast Within to Steel Magnolias, Tremors and Betsy’s Wedding, demonstrating how readily she could fit into ensembles across very different genres. Her later television performances brought particular recognition. Besch received an Emmy nomination in 1992 for Doing Time on Maple Drive, in which William McNamara and Jim Carrey played her sons. A year later, she earned another nomination for her recurring role as the neurotic mother of Janine Turner’s character on Northern Exposure. Besch continued acting until her death in 1996, leaving well over 100 film and television credits. Her daughter, Samantha Mathis, also became an actress.
