Beverly D'Angelo

Beverly D'Angelo has built a career around range: broad comedy, grounded drama, musical performance, television, theatre and voice acting. Born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1951, she worked as an illustrator at Hanna-Barbera Studios and as a singer before turning to acting. Her stage career included the 1976 Broadway musical Rockabye Hamlet, followed that same year by her television debut in the miniseries Captains and the Kings. Early film roles in Annie Hall, Every Which Way but Loose and Hair led to Coal Miner's Daughter, in which she played country singer Patsy Cline. The performance earned D'Angelo a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress, while the film's music brought her a Country Music Association award for Album of the Year. It showed how naturally her musical background could feed into her acting without taking over the performance. For many viewers, D'Angelo remains closely associated with Ellen Griswold, the role she first played opposite Chevy Chase in National Lampoon's Vacation in 1983. She returned as Ellen across four sequels and the short film Hotel Hell Vacation, giving the comedy series a steady human centre amid its escalating family disasters. That role never defined the limits of her work. D'Angelo received an Emmy nomination for playing Stella Kowalski in the 1984 television film A Streetcar Named Desire and later appeared in dramas including Eye for an Eye and American History X. She returned to the stage in the Off-Broadway production Simpatico, winning a Theatre World Award in 1994. Her television work has ranged from defense attorney Rebecca Balthus on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit to agent Barbara "Babs" Miller on Entourage. As a voice actor, she has repeatedly played country singer Lurleen Lumpkin on The Simpsons. Later screen appearances include Mom, Shooter, Insatiable and the Christmas action comedy Violent Night. Across formats and genres, D'Angelo has shown a particular knack for characters who can hold their ground, whether the surrounding story calls for domestic chaos, show-business maneuvering or something much darker.
