Please Rewind Talent Wall
Betty Buckley
Betty Buckley has built a career in which acting and singing are not separate talents so much as parts of the same expressive range. Born in Big Spring, Texas, in 1947, she decided to pursue musical theatre after seeing The Pajama Game at age 11. Her first professional role came four years later, as Dainty June in Gypsy. She went on to earn a journalism degree from Texas Christian University and work as a reporter before making her Broadway debut in the original 1969 production of 1776. For movie audiences, Buckley made an early impression as Miss Collins, the gym teacher in the original 1976 film Carrie. The role called for warmth within an increasingly cruel and frightening story, and Buckley gave the film one of its few dependable adult figures. Her later screen work has moved easily between intimate drama, suspense and horror. In Tender Mercies, she played a country singer and performed the Academy Award-nominated song "Over You." She also appeared in Another Woman, Frantic, Wyatt Earp and The Happening, and returned to unsettling territory in M. Night Shyamalan's Split. Television gave Buckley one of her best-known roles in Eight Is Enough, which she joined in its second season as Sandra Sue "Abby" Abbott, the new romantic interest of widower Tom Bradford and eventual stepmother to his eight children. From 2001 to 2003, she played Suzanne Fitzgerald on HBO's Oz. Her television work also includes The Pacific, Pretty Little Liars, The Leftovers, Supergirl and Preacher. Buckley's stage career remains central to understanding her screen presence. She originated Grizabella in the Broadway production of Cats and won a Tony Award for the role, later playing Norma Desmond in London and New York productions of Sunset Boulevard. Whether carrying a song or tightening the mood of a scene, she brings theatrical command without losing the human scale of the character. That combination has allowed her to move between Broadway, film and television with unusual consistency.
