Bessie Love

Bessie Love’s career stretched from the silent era to the early 1980s, crossing film, theatre, radio and television with a knack for adapting whenever the business changed around her. Born Juanita Horton in Midland, Texas, on September 10, 1898, she moved with her family through Arizona and New Mexico before settling in Hollywood. Her entry into pictures came in 1915. After arriving on a film set hoping to meet Tom Mix, she was directed instead toward D.W. Griffith, who placed her under contract. Griffith associate Frank Woods supplied the shorter, marquee-ready name Bessie Love. She appeared in Griffith’s Intolerance, filmed early in her career but released as her ninth picture, and worked opposite William S. Hart and Douglas Fairbanks before receiving her first starring role in A Sister of Six in 1916. Love soon pushed beyond the youthful parts that had defined her early work. As a free agent in the 1920s, she pursued more varied dramatic roles while developing her abilities as a singer, dancer and ukulele player. She starred in the science-fiction adventure The Lost World in 1925 and Frank Capra’s romantic comedy The Matinee Idol in 1928. Her performance in The King on Main Street is also credited with introducing the Charleston to film and helping popularize the dance in the United States. Those stage-honed musical skills made Love particularly well suited to the arrival of sound. Her performance in MGM’s The Broadway Melody earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, and she followed it with early musicals including The Hollywood Revue of 1929, Chasing Rainbows and Good News. After moving to England in 1935, Love built another chapter through British theatre, BBC radio, television and supporting film roles. Her later screen work ranged from The Barefoot Contessa and Isadora to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Reds and The Hunger, her final film in 1983. It is a career defined less by one fixed screen image than by unusual durability: ingenue, dramatic lead, musical performer and, eventually, a dependable character presence across several generations of filmmaking.
