Bess Armstrong has built the kind of career that moves comfortably between film, television and the stage. Born Elizabeth Key Armstrong in Baltimore on December 11, 1953, she graduated from Brown University in 1975 and began acting professionally that same year with the Off-Off Broadway production Harmony House. Television soon became a major part of her work. Armstrong made her TV debut as Julia Peters on the CBS sitcom On Our Own in 1977, followed by the television movies Getting Married, opposite Richard Thomas, and How to Pick Up Girls! with Desi Arnaz Jr. She reunited with Thomas for a 1981 Seattle stage production of Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park, which was also recorded for an HBO broadcast. Her film work during the 1980s shows the breadth of her screen career. She appeared opposite Tom Selleck in High Road to China, joined Dennis Quaid in Jaws 3-D and featured in Alan Alda’s The Four Seasons. Armstrong also appeared in Nothing in Common, starring Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason, while continuing to take television roles, including the miniseries Lace. For many viewers, Armstrong is best known as Patty Chase on My So-Called Life. The role placed her at the heart of a series closely concerned with family life, adolescence and the complicated distance between parents and children. It remains a defining part of her television career. Armstrong has continued working across formats rather than settling into one lane. Her later television appearances include Frasier, Boston Legal, Castle, Mad Men, NCIS and S.W.A.T., along with a recurring role as Julianne Hotschragar on House of Lies. From sitcoms and television dramas to theatrical features and stage productions, her career reflects a steady adaptability and a willingness to move wherever the part takes her.
