Bernard Horsfall

Bernard Horsfall built a wide-ranging acting career across stage, film and television, moving comfortably between period drama, science fiction, thrillers and large-scale historical productions. Born in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, in 1930, he attended Rugby School before training at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. His stage career included work at the Old Vic, with the Royal Shakespeare Company and at the National Theatre. On television, Horsfall took the title role in Campion from 1959 to 1960 and appeared in Pathfinders to Mars, The Avengers, Department S and Beasts. He played Sir Christopher Hatton in the 1971 BBC miniseries Elizabeth R, later taking roles in Enemy at the Door, The Jewel in the Crown and Strangers and Brothers. In Lady Killers, Granada Television's dramatisation of the Ruth Ellis case, he portrayed British barrister Melford Stevenson. Horsfall also became a familiar presence in Doctor Who through four serials directed by David Maloney. He first appeared as Lemuel Gulliver in The Mind Robber, followed by roles as a Time Lord in The War Games, Taron in Planet of the Daleks and Chancellor Goth in The Deadly Assassin. Years later, he returned to the series' world for the Big Finish audio drama Davros. Elsewhere in television science fiction and adventure, he appeared as Christianson in a 1972 episode of The Persuaders! titled The Morning After. His film work included Guns at Batasi, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Gandhi and Braveheart, in which he played Balliol. He also appeared as Frankland in the 1988 ITV production of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Across those roles, Horsfall's career shows the value of a dependable character actor: equally at home carrying an early television series, entering an established programme as a guest performer or adding weight to an expansive film production.
