Bernadette Peters

Bernadette Peters has built a career in which musical precision, comic timing and emotional directness comfortably share the same frame. Born on February 28, 1948, in Ozone Park, Queens, she entered show business remarkably young, appearing on Juvenile Jury at three and a half. By nine, she had obtained her Actors’ Equity card under the name Bernadette Peters and made her professional stage debut. Theatre became a defining part of her work, but Peters has never been confined to it. After moving to Los Angeles in the early 1970s to focus on film and television, she appeared in Mel Brooks’ Silent Movie and starred opposite Steve Martin in The Jerk. Their second film together, Pennies from Heaven, gave Peters the role of Eileen Everson, a schoolteacher whose life takes a darker turn. Her performance won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Comedy or Musical, reflecting her ability to find toughness and feeling beneath a heightened musical style. Her screen career has continued to move freely between comedy, drama and song. She appeared in Annie, Slaves of New York, Pink Cadillac, Alice and Impromptu, while her voice work included Sophie in Anastasia and the singing stray cat Rita in Animaniacs. On television, she has taken roles in Ally McBeal, Will & Grace, Grey’s Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Smash, Mozart in the Jungle, The Good Fight and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. Peters’ stage work remains inseparable from her screen identity. Her performances in Stephen Sondheim musicals such as Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, A Little Night Music and Follies established her as a particularly important interpreter of his work. She has won two Tony Awards for leading performances in musicals and received an honorary Tony Award for her charitable contributions. Across those different forms, Peters brings the same essential qualities: a distinctive musical voice, an alert sense of humor and an ability to let vulnerability register without overselling it.
