Born in Charlotte on November 4, 1949, Berlinda Tolbert built a career across television, film and the stage. She majored in theater at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem and also studied drama in London. Acting was not a sideline: in a 2013 interview, Tolbert said that professional actress was the only job she had ever had. Her first film part came while she was still in acting school, when Martin Scorsese cast her in Mean Streets in 1973. Her career soon found its defining television role in The Jeffersons. From 1975 to 1985, Tolbert played Jenny, the daughter of interracial couple Tom and Helen Willis. Jenny’s relationship with Lionel Jefferson developed from an engagement established during the characters’ time on All in the Family to marriage and a daughter. Playing Jenny for the full run of The Jeffersons gave Tolbert a decade-long place within one of television’s best-known family ensembles. Tolbert’s work extended beyond that series. In 1983, she starred in Maya Angelou’s play On a Southern Journey. After The Jeffersons ended, she appeared in films including Harlem Nights, Goodfellas and Patriot Games, moving between comedy, crime drama and thriller territory. Her later television credits included ER, Six Feet Under and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She also appeared in the 2011 independent film Last Ride on the Midwest Pacific. Taken together, Tolbert’s credits show a working actress whose career was never limited to the part audiences knew best. Jenny remains the central role in her screen story, but Tolbert continued to turn up across markedly different projects and genres.
