Ben Johnson
Ben Johnson brought the steady presence of a working cowboy to the screen because, long before he became an actor, that was the life he knew. Born in Foraker, Oklahoma, on June 13, 1918, he worked as a ranch hand from an early age and followed his rodeo-champion father into competition, eventually becoming a world-champion rodeo cowboy himself. His horsemanship provided an unusual route into Hollywood. Johnson first arrived while delivering horses for a film, and he later credited Howard Hughes with starting his career by hiring him as a horse wrangler and stuntman on The Outlaw. His stunt work subsequently caught the attention of John Ford. After Johnson stopped a runaway wagon during the making of Fort Apache, Ford rewarded him with a seven-year acting contract rather than the small speaking part Johnson had expected. Johnson’s first credited role came in Ford’s 3 Godfathers, followed by Mighty Joe Young, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande and the leading role in Wagon Master. These films made expressive use of his riding ability, but his appeal went beyond physical credibility. His calm, firm manner suited characters who seemed to understand the terrain, the work and the consequences before anyone else did. He became a dependable presence across several generations of Westerns, playing Chris Calloway in Shane and appearing in Sam Peckinpah’s Major Dundee, The Wild Bunch, Junior Bonner and The Getaway. He also reunited with John Wayne in The Undefeated and Chisum, while television roles included The Virginian, The Monroes and Have Gun Will Travel. His most celebrated performance was Sam the Lion in Peter Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Show, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. It revealed how much Johnson could convey through restraint, weathered authority and carefully delivered dialogue. Later work included Dillinger, Bite the Bullet, Breakheart Pass, Red Dawn and the 1994 version of Angels in the Outfield. Throughout his screen career, he continued ranching and operating a horse-breeding ranch in California.
