Ben Cross

Ben Cross (1947–2020) was a British actor whose screen career drew on a substantial grounding in theatre. Born Harry Bernard Cross in London on 16 December 1947, he came from a working-class family and held jobs including window cleaner, waiter and joiner before entering the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art at 22. After graduating, he worked at the Dukes theatre, with the Prospect Theatre Company and at Leicester’s Haymarket Theatre, taking on plays and musicals rather than settling into a single lane. Cross joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1977, but it was his turn as the smooth lawyer Billy Flynn in Chicago that helped move his career towards the screen. His first major film appearance had already come as Trooper Binns in the Second World War epic A Bridge Too Far. International recognition followed when he played runner Harold Abrahams in Chariots of Fire, bringing determination and tension to the story of an athlete confronting prejudice on the way to the 1924 Olympics. Cross and co-star Ian Charleson received the Variety Club’s Most Promising Artiste awards for their performances, while the film won the Academy Award for Best Picture. That role established the poised, forceful presence Cross would carry into an unusually varied collection of parts. He played physician Andrew Manson in the BBC adaptation of The Citadel and cavalry officer Ashton Pelham-Martyn in The Far Pavilions. Later roles ranged from the vampire Barnabas Collins in the 1991 Dark Shadows remake and the title character in Solomon to Captain Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Cross continued moving between film, television and theatre in the decades that followed. He portrayed Rudolf Hess in Nuremberg: Nazis on Trial, played Spock’s father Sarek in the 2009 Star Trek film and appeared as the ruthless gangster Rabbit in Banshee. His work also extended beyond acting: he wrote screenplays, music and stage works, directed theatre and contributed lyrics to recordings. It was a broad career, shaped less by one fixed screen persona than by a willingness to move between historical drama, science fiction, crime and the stage.
