Ben Chaplin

Ben Chaplin has built the kind of career that is difficult to reduce to one signature part. A British actor born in Windsor on 31 July 1969, he became interested in acting during his school years and enrolled at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama at seventeen. Before acting became his full-time profession, he worked various office jobs and spent time as a statistician for the London Transport Authority. His stage name came from his mother’s maiden name. Chaplin began with small parts in BBC dramas before taking a major role opposite Jason Flemyng in Channel Four’s Bye Bye Baby. Early film work included The Remains of the Day and Feast of July, while the first series of the BBC sitcom Game On gave him a television lead as the socially awkward Matthew. His move into American films brought The Truth About Cats & Dogs, in which he played a photographer at the centre of a romantic Cyrano de Bergerac variation. He followed it with the fortune-hunting Morris Townsend in Washington Square and Private Bell in Terrence Malick’s The Thin Red Line. Those roles established a pattern that has continued across his work: Chaplin can move from romantic comedy to period drama, war film and psychological thriller without seeming tied to a single screen persona. Later performances ranged from an introverted bank clerk in Birthday Girl and an inexperienced investigator in Murder by Numbers to the Duke of Buckingham in Stage Beauty. He returned to Malick’s work with a small role in The New World, played George Coulouris in Richard Linklater’s Me and Orson Welles, and appeared as Cinderella’s father in Cinderella. Theatre has remained an important part of Chaplin’s career. His performance as Tom Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie earned an Olivier Award nomination, while The Retreat from Moscow brought a Tony Award nomination. His stage work has also included Consent and Mood Music. On television, he starred with Emily Watson in Apple Tree Yard and played unethical tabloid editor Duncan Allen in the BBC drama Press—another sharp turn in a career shaped by range rather than repetition.
