Bebe Neuwirth
Bebe Neuwirth has built a career around precision, whether she is landing a sharply timed line on television, playing a coolly controlled presence on film or taking command of a Broadway stage. Born in Newark, New Jersey, on December 31, 1958, she began ballet lessons at five after seeing The Nutcracker. A teenage encounter with Pippin shifted her ambitions toward Broadway, setting her on a path that would combine dance, acting and singing. Neuwirth made her Broadway debut as Sheila Bryant in A Chorus Line in 1980. Her stage career soon became central to her work: she won a Tony Award for her featured performance in the 1986 revival of Sweet Charity, then earned further recognition as Velma Kelly in the 1996 revival of Chicago, including a Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Her history with Chicago is unusually rich. She returned as Roxie Hart in 2006 and as “Mama” Morton in 2014, becoming the first performer to play three different characters during the same Broadway run. She later created the role of Morticia Addams in the original Broadway production of The Addams Family and returned to Broadway in 2024 as Fräulein Schneider in Cabaret, receiving another Tony nomination. She was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame in 2023. For television audiences, Neuwirth is closely associated with Dr. Lilith Sternin, the formidably composed psychiatrist introduced on Cheers. Originally intended for a single episode, Lilith became a recurring character and eventually a main cast member. Neuwirth won two Emmy Awards for the role and later carried Lilith into Wings and Frasier. Her film work has moved easily between comedy, drama and genre pictures, with credits including Say Anything..., Green Card, Bugsy, Malice, Jumanji, The Faculty, Liberty Heights and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. She returned as Nora Shepherd in Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019. Across stage and screen, Neuwirth’s range comes from the same foundation: disciplined movement, exact timing and a willingness to let restraint do the work.
