Beau Bridges

Beau Bridges has the kind of screen presence that can suggest authority without stiffness and warmth without sentimentality. Born in Hollywood on December 9, 1941, he grew up in an acting family: his parents were Lloyd and Dorothy Bridges, and his younger brother is Jeff Bridges. His screen career began early, with juvenile appearances in Force of Evil and No Minor Vices in 1948, followed by The Red Pony in 1949. He later appeared alongside Jeff on their father’s anthology series, The Lloyd Bridges Show, during the 1962–63 television season. Those family connections continued to surface on screen: Beau acted with Lloyd in Harts of the West and with his father and son Dylan in the 1995 Outer Limits pilot, “The Sandkings.” Steady work across the 1970s and ’80s gave Bridges a filmography that resisted easy categorization. His movies from that period include The Landlord, Greased Lightning, Norma Rae, Heart Like a Wheel and The Hotel New Hampshire. In 1989, he took on perhaps his best-known film role, starring opposite Jeff as one half of the sibling musical act in The Fabulous Baker Boys. Television has been just as central to his career. Bridges played CIA director Senator Tom Gage in more than 30 episodes of The Agency, then became Major General Hank Landry in Stargate SG-1, returning in Stargate Atlantis and two direct-to-DVD Stargate films. His recurring turn as Carl Hickey on My Name Is Earl earned him a 2007 Emmy nomination, while his guest appearance as Eli Scruggs in the 100th episode of Desperate Housewives brought another nomination in 2009. From comedy in The Millers to legal drama in the new Matlock, where he took the role of law-firm managing partner Howard “Senior” Markeson in 2024, Bridges has remained a versatile and reassuring presence across film and television.
