Barry Morse

Barry Morse built the kind of career that makes the word “versatile” feel less like praise than a simple description. Born in west London in 1918, he worked across stage, radio, film and television, moving between Britain, Canada and the United States while bringing a crisp, controlled presence to an unusually wide range of parts. Morse entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art on a scholarship at 15. Still a student, he secured his first paid acting job in If I Were King, and at graduation played the title role in Henry V at a Royal Command Performance. Years in repertory theatre followed, giving him experience in more than 200 roles before his work expanded across the West End, Broadway and touring productions. His long connection with George Bernard Shaw also ran through his career, from meeting the playwright during his RADA years to later portraying him on stage. On film, Morse debuted in the 1942 comedy The Goose Steps Out. His screen credits later included Kings of the Sun, Justine, Puzzle of a Downfall Child, Asylum, Funeral Home and The Changeling. His final movie appearance came in I Really Hate My Job, released in 2007. Television brought his most widely recognised role: Lieutenant Philip Gerard in The Fugitive. Morse played the determined pursuer of Richard Kimble with such conviction that the character followed him beyond the screen. He later took another major science-fiction role as Dr. Victor Bergman in the first series of Space: 1999. Across a remarkably busy television career, he also appeared in The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, The Saint, The Winds of War and War and Remembrance. Radio remained just as important to Morse. He worked extensively for the BBC and CBC, performing everything from Hamlet to 1984, and continued in the medium into the 2000s. He was also a director, writer and teacher, serving as artistic director of Canada’s Shaw Festival for its 1966 season and as an adjunct professor at Yale Drama School in 1968. Morse died in 2008, leaving a body of work shaped by theatrical discipline, curiosity and an appetite for nearly every form of performance.
