Barry Corbin

Barry Corbin has made a career out of authority figures who feel lived-in rather than ornamental. Sheriffs, generals, coaches and stern fathers have been recurring assignments, but Corbin’s grounded presence keeps them from becoming interchangeable. He can suggest command, impatience or dry humor without losing the sense that his characters have lives beyond the scene. Born in Lamesa, Texas, on October 16, 1940, Corbin moved toward the arts early, leaving a brief spell of eighth-grade football for acting and ballet classes. After graduating from Monterey High School in Lubbock, he studied theater arts at Texas Tech University. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps at 21, served for two years and then returned to Texas Tech. His professional career began in the 1960s with Shakespearean acting, a foundation that sits neatly beneath the plainspoken authority of his later screen work. Movie audiences may know him as General Beringer in WarGames, Bob Davis in Urban Cowboy or from his appearance alongside Clint Eastwood in Any Which Way You Can. He also played Roscoe Brown, deputy to July Johnson, in the Western Lonesome Dove and appeared in No Country for Old Men. Television gave Corbin room to build some of his most substantial characters. He played Sheriff Fenton Washburn on Dallas, Pete in The Thorn Birds and investigation chief Franz Grebner in Fatal Vision. From 1990 to 1995, he was former astronaut and local businessman Maurice Minnifield on Northern Exposure, earning Primetime Emmy nominations in 1993 and 1994. Later roles included basketball coach Whitey Durham on One Tree Hill, Clay Johnson on The Closer, an appearance in The Ranch and recurring guest Everett Acker on Better Call Saul. Corbin’s work has also extended beyond conventional film and television acting. He narrated the space-race documentary Moon Shot, played General Carville in three Command & Conquer games and became a familiar radio voice through KPLX in Fort Worth. Across those formats, the same qualities hold: a substantial voice, an unforced sense of place and a knack for making authority feel human.
