Barbara Bryne’s career has a sturdy theatrical backbone, but her work also reached film and television in ways that made good use of her stage experience. Born Barbara Isabel Birkinshaw in Lambeth, London, on 1 April 1929, the British actress studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before moving to Canada in the early 1960s. From 1966, Bryne became a frequent performer at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario. She also built an association of around 50 years with Minneapolis’s Guthrie Theater, appearing in productions including Mother Courage, The Glass Menagerie, She Stoops to Conquer, Design for Living and Pygmalion. That range—from classical comedy to modern drama—captures the breadth of a career that was never confined to one kind of part. Bryne also had a notable place in Stephen Sondheim’s stage work. She appeared in the original Broadway production of Sunday in the Park with George as George’s mother, then played Jack’s mother in the original Broadway production of Into the Woods. Her Sondheim credits also included a Washington, D.C. production of A Little Night Music. Her screen appearances carried that varied résumé into a different register. Bryne played Mrs. Gaffney on the television series Love, Sidney from 1981 to 1983. Her film and television credits include The School for Scandal, Amadeus, The Bostonians, Sunday in the Park with George, Two Evil Eyes, Into the Woods and a 1993 television production of Romeo & Juliet. In 2011, she appeared as Queen Victoria in H.M.S. Pinafore, a production filmed for PBS. Taken together, Bryne’s work reflects a performer equally at home with Shakespeare, Sondheim, drawing-room comedy and screen drama—a career shaped less by celebrity machinery than by sustained engagement with the material.
