Barbara Bosson

Barbara Bosson was an American actress whose screen career found its strongest footing in television drama, where she brought conviction to characters caught inside complicated institutions and demanding stories. Born on November 1, 1939, in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, she was raised in nearby Belle Vernon before her family moved to Florida. After graduating from Boca Ciega High School in 1957, she moved to New York, worked as a secretary for the American Conservatory Theater and as a Playboy Bunny, and studied acting with Herbert Berghof and Milton Katselas. She later enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University at age 26. Bosson made her screen debut in a minor role in the 1968 crime thriller Bullitt. Her early career included work with the improvisation group The Committee, an appearance on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and guest roles across 1970s television, including Mannix, Emergency!, Ironside and McMillan & Wife. She also took supporting film roles in Mame, Capricorn One and The Last Starfighter. Her defining part was Fay Furillo on Hill Street Blues. Bosson appeared throughout the police drama’s first six seasons, from 1981 to 1986, and received five Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. The role placed her within one of television’s busy ensemble worlds and gave her sustained dramatic material over several years. Bosson continued moving between comedy, legal drama and procedural television. She was a regular on Hooperman, starred in the musical procedural Cop Rock and held a recurring role on Civil Wars. Guest appearances included Murder, She Wrote, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. From 1995 to 1997, she played tough prosecutor Miriam Grasso on Murder One, earning another Emmy nomination. Across film and television, Bosson built a career around grounded ensemble work and forceful supporting roles.
