Barbara Babcock

Barbara Babcock built a wide-ranging screen career out of versatility, moving between television drama, comedy, Westerns and film without becoming tied to a single kind of part. Born on February 27, 1937, in Fort Riley, Kansas, she spent much of her childhood in Tokyo and learned to speak Japanese before English. She later studied at the University of Lausanne and the University of Milan before graduating from Wellesley College. Babcock made her television debut in a 1956 episode of The United States Steel Hour. Guest roles became a steady part of her early career, with appearances on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, The Munsters, Mission: Impossible and Hogan’s Heroes. She also appeared in several episodes of the original Star Trek, though much of her contribution to the series came through uncredited voice roles. Her film career began with the 1968 Western Day of the Evil Gun, followed by Heaven with a Gun. Supporting parts in Bang the Drum Slowly, The Black Marble, The Lords of Discipline and Heart of Dixie showed how comfortably she could move between genres. She later played the mother of Nicole Kidman’s character in Far and Away and made her final big-screen appearance in Space Cowboys in 2000. Television, however, gave Babcock some of her richest and most sustained work. After a recurring role as Liz Craig on Dallas, she played Grace Gardner on Hill Street Blues, appearing in 17 episodes between 1981 and 1987. The performance earned her the 1981 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She also led The Law & Harry McGraw and appeared repeatedly on Murder, She Wrote. From 1993 to 1998, Babcock played Dorothy Jennings on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, earning an Emmy nomination for the role and returning for Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman: The Movie. Later appearances on Frasier, Judging Amy and Pasadena extended a career shaped less by one signature vehicle than by decades of assured, adaptable character work.
