Ballard Berkeley

Ballard Berkeley was a British stage and screen actor whose career moved through pre-war cinema, wartime service, television comedy, radio and animation. Born in 1904, he was already working regularly in the quota quickies of the 1930s, including an early heroic lead in The Last Adventurers in 1937. Later film appearances included the wartime drama In Which We Serve and Alfred Hitchcock’s Stage Fright. His career took an unusual turn during the Second World War, when he served as a special constable with the Metropolitan Police and witnessed the Blitz at first hand. He received the Defence Medal and the Special Constabulary Long Service Medal for that service before continuing an acting career that became increasingly familiar to television audiences. Berkeley is best known as Major Gowen in Fawlty Towers, the retired military man whose cheerful confusion made him an ideal resident of Basil Fawlty’s troubled hotel. The role suited Berkeley’s ability to play authority figures whose dignity was gently undercut by circumstance. Variations followed across British television: Hartley in To the Manor Born, Colonel Culpepper in Terry and June, and Guy, Hester’s father, in Fresh Fields. He also appeared in Citizen Smith, Bless This House, The New Avengers, Hi-de-Hi! and Are You Being Served? That unmistakably military bearing continued to serve him well on radio. He played Colonel Freddie Danby in The Archers, Winston in Wrinkles, Badedas the Blue in Hordes of the Things and Colonel Brace-Cartwright in Lenin of the Rovers. His later screen work included a brief appearance in National Lampoon’s European Vacation, while his final on-screen role was the Head of the Army in the animated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG. Berkeley died in London in 1988, leaving behind a career shaped less by star billing than by a dependable, distinctly British comic presence.
