Avery Brooks

Avery Brooks is an American actor and director whose work moves easily among television, film, classical theatre and music. Born in Evansville, Indiana, in 1948, he grew up in a household filled with music and later credited Gary, Indiana, with shaping him. That musical foundation—his mother was a choral conductor and music instructor, while his father was a singer—became central to a career built as much around voice and rhythm as physical presence. Brooks completed a BA and an MFA at Rutgers University in 1976, becoming the first African American to receive an MFA in acting and directing from the university. His stage work has included Othello, King Lear, Tamburlaine, Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman and a long association with the role of Paul Robeson. These were substantial parts suited to Brooks’s deep baritone and commanding performance style. Television brought him to a wider audience. In 1985, he was cast as Hawk in Spenser: For Hire, playing the character for three seasons before leading the short-lived spinoff A Man Called Hawk and returning for four Spenser television movies. Brooks approached Hawk as an equal rather than a sidekick, a distinction that helps explain the character’s force. His best-known role remains Benjamin Sisko in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Brooks led the seven-season series from 1993 to 1999, becoming the first Black-American captain to lead a Star Trek series. He also directed nine episodes, including “Far Beyond the Stars,” which focused on racial injustice. On film, Brooks played Dr. Bob Sweeney in American History X, Paris in The Big Hit and Detective Leon Jackson in 15 Minutes. His work beyond acting is equally wide-ranging: he has directed theatre, taught at several colleges, performed jazz and opera, recorded the album Here, and narrated documentaries including Walking with Dinosaurs. Across those forms, the connecting thread is unmistakable—a performer who treats the voice not simply as an instrument, but as a dramatic presence of its own.
