Austin Pendleton’s career resists being reduced to a single part of the business. He is a film, television, stage and voice actor, but also a playwright, writer, theatre director and longtime teacher. That range helps explain the particular texture of his screen presence: the alertness of a performer who has spent decades thinking about what makes a scene work from every side. Born on March 27, 1940, in Warren, Ohio, Pendleton found his way toward theatre through his mother, professional actress Frances Pendleton. He watched her perform as a child and was staging his own basement productions by junior high. After participating in theatre at Yale University and graduating in 1961, he moved to New York and studied at HB Studio. His early stage career included the 1962 off-Broadway production of Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feelin’ So Sad. Director Jerome Robbins later brought him into the original Broadway cast of Fiddler on the Roof as Motel the tailor. Pendleton went on to win a Drama Desk Award and an Obie Award for his performance in The Last Sweet Days of Isaac. Acting is only one part of his work. Pendleton wrote Uncle Bob, Booth and Orson’s Shadow, all staged off-Broadway, and has directed extensively on and off Broadway. His production of The Little Foxes, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Maureen Stapleton, earned him a Tony Award nomination in 1981, while his 2011 direction of Three Sisters received an Obie Award. He has also maintained a long association with Steppenwolf Theatre and has taught acting at HB Studio since 1969. The 2016 documentary Starring Austin Pendleton examined his life and work through conversations with colleagues including Meryl Streep, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ethan Hawke. It is a fitting frame for a career built not around one defining role, but around sustained curiosity across acting, writing, directing and teaching.
