Austin Nichols

Austin Nichols has built a screen career that moves easily between studio films, independent projects and long-running television roles. Born on April 24, 1980, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he moved to Austin, Texas, before his first birthday and grew up near Lake Austin. Long before acting took hold, competitive water skiing was his focus: Nichols joined the United States junior water ski team, competed in the 1997 Pan-American Championships and was ranked third in the world at thirteen. A shoulder injury ended his plans to pursue the sport professionally. Nichols began taking acting lessons at fifteen and moved to Los Angeles after high school. After being signed by a manager following an uninvited visit to a Sundance Film Festival party, he studied English at the University of Southern California, graduating in 2002 while already taking television guest roles. His early film work showed a knack for characters whose confidence could shade into arrogance. He played a frat boy in the 2003 independent film The Utopian Society, followed by J.D., the wealthy romantic rival in The Day After Tomorrow, and tennis professional Jake Hammond in Wimbledon. The latter required him to learn tennis from scratch under former champion Pat Cash. Sports training returned with Glory Road, for which Nichols learned the style of basketball played during the 1960s. On television, Nichols took on the mysterious John Monad in David Milch’s surfing drama John From Cincinnati, preparing with three months of daily surfing practice. He later became a series regular as Julian Baker on One Tree Hill and directed two episodes of the show. Further television work included Tommy Wheeler in Ray Donovan, Spencer Monroe in The Walking Dead and Sam Loomis in the final season of Bates Motel. That combination of athletic commitment and willingness to play difficult, guarded or disruptive characters has given Nichols a flexible presence across genres. His work has also expanded beyond acting into directing, screenwriting and producing, while later roles include Rodney Metzer in the 2024 Lifetime film Gaslit By My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story.
