Aurore Clément

Aurore Clément has built a career that moves naturally between French cinema, major international productions and the stage. Born Marie-Thérèse Aurore Louise Clément in Soissons on 12 October 1945, she worked to support her family after her father died while she was still young. She later spent time modelling in Paris before establishing herself as an actor. Her film career began to gather momentum with an appearance in Louis Malle’s Lacombe Lucien in 1974. Since then, Clément has taken on roles across more than five decades and appeared in over 80 films. That long body of work includes her first role in a U.S. movie, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. She spoke no English when Coppola contacted her about the part. The extended sequence featuring French former colonists was removed from the original 1979 release, and Clément has said she discovered the omission only when she first saw the finished film more than two years after shooting. Her scenes eventually returned in the 2001 Redux version. For many viewers, Clément remains most closely associated with Anne in Paris, Texas. Released in 1984, the film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and became one of the defining titles in her extensive screen career. Clément’s work has never been confined to film. She made her French stage debut in 1988 in The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs, adapted from George Moore’s short story, and received an acting prize from the French Association of Theatre Critics. Her later theatre credits include Les Eaux et Forêts and La Dame aux Camélias, the latter earning her a Molière Award nomination. Taken together, her screen and stage work reveal a career shaped by longevity, range and a willingness to move between different kinds of performance.
