Ashley Judd

Ashley Judd has built a screen career that moves easily between intimate character studies, studio thrillers, television and the stage. Born Ashley Tyler Ciminella in Granada Hills, Los Angeles, on April 19, 1968, she spent much of her childhood in Kentucky. She later studied French at the University of Kentucky, alongside subjects including theater, anthropology, art history and women’s studies, before moving to Hollywood and studying acting at Playhouse West. Her earliest television work included two appearances as Ensign Robin Lefler on Star Trek: The Next Generation and a recurring role as Reed on the NBC drama Sisters. After a small part in Kuffs, Judd landed her first starring role in Victor Nuñez’s Ruby in Paradise. Playing Ruby Lee Gissing, a young woman attempting to begin again, gave Judd a substantial dramatic showcase; the film won the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize. The mid-1990s quickly demonstrated her range. She appeared as Harvey Keitel’s estranged daughter in Smoke, played Val Kilmer’s wife in Michael Mann’s Heat and took on supporting work in A Time to Kill. By the decade’s end, Kiss the Girls and Double Jeopardy had established her as a leading presence in successful thrillers. Those films made particularly effective use of her ability to convey determination under pressure without losing sight of a character’s vulnerability. Judd continued with starring roles in Where the Heart Is, Someone Like You, High Crimes and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, while also appearing in Frida. In 2003, she played Maggie the Cat in a Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Her performance opposite Kevin Kline in De-Lovely brought a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. Later work has included the television series Missing, the Dolphin Tale films, Olympus Has Fallen and the Divergent series, in which she played Natalie Prior. Across those varied projects, Judd’s career has remained grounded in characters facing difficult choices—whether in a low-key independent drama, a tightly wound thriller or a large-scale franchise.
