Ashanti

Ashanti is best known as a singer and songwriter, but acting has been part of her story since well before her recording breakthrough. Born Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas on October 13, 1980, in Glen Cove, New York, she first appeared on screen as a child extra in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X and Ted Demme’s Who’s the Man? Those early appearances eventually gave way to a screen career spanning drama, comedy, fantasy, action and television. By the time Ashanti made her feature-film acting debut in Coach Carter in 2005, she had already established herself as a major R&B performer. The film gave her a grounded dramatic part opposite Samuel L. Jackson: Kyra, a pregnant teenager facing a difficult decision about her future. That same year, she took a very different route as Dorothy Gale in the television film The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz, a role that naturally brought her acting and singing together. Ashanti continued to move between tones rather than settling into one screen lane. She joined the ensemble of the teen comedy John Tucker Must Die in 2006, then entered a much harsher world with a supporting role in Resident Evil: Extinction the following year. Her television work later included her first series-regular role as Latasha Montclair in the seventh season of Army Wives, a guest appearance on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and a starring role in the Lifetime film Christmas in the City. She also appeared as herself in two episodes of The CW’s Dynasty reboot. Music remains central to Ashanti’s career. Her self-titled debut album reached number one on the Billboard 200, and “Foolish” spent ten weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. Yet her acting work shows a performer willing to step outside the format that first made her famous, whether playing an emotionally burdened teenager, joining an effects-driven action film or leaning into the playful theatricality of Oz. She also appeared on the soundtrack of Stuck, a film she produced, further connecting her work in music and movies.
