Arye Gross

Arye Gross is an American actor and director whose career moves comfortably between television, film and a substantial body of stage work. Born in Los Angeles on March 17, 1960, he has remained closely connected to the city’s theatre scene while building a screen career defined by recurring characters, guest appearances and the occasional turn behind the camera. Gross is best known on television for playing Adam Green during the first three seasons of the ABC series Ellen. He later starred alongside James Cromwell in Citizen Baines and took on the recurring role of Dr. Sidney Perlmutter on Castle. His guest work stretches across very different corners of television, including Diff’rent Strokes, Knight Rider, The Outer Limits, Friends, Six Feet Under, Diagnosis: Murder, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. He also has an unusual footnote in the history of The Wonder Years: Gross provided the adult voice of Kevin Arnold in the pilot when it first aired after Super Bowl XXII. The narration was subsequently re-recorded by Daniel Stern, who remained with the series. Theatre has been a consistent part of Gross’s career. He spent three years in South Coast Repertory’s acting company and later appeared in the world premieres of Richard Greenberg’s Our Mother’s Brief Affair and Donald Margulies’s Brooklyn Boy. When Brooklyn Boy moved to New York, it marked his Broadway debut. His Los Angeles-area stage credits include work with Pasadena Playhouse, Los Angeles Theatre Center, Odyssey Theatre Ensemble and the Grove Shakespeare Festival. As a member of Antaeus Theatre Company, he appeared in Mrs. Warren’s Profession and played the title role in Uncle Vanya. In 1999, Gross expanded his film work by acting in and directing The Prince and the Surfer, his feature directorial debut. It is another example of a career that has never depended on only one medium or one kind of part.
