Arthur Rosenberg

Arthur Rosenberg’s career does not fit neatly into a conventional actor profile. Born in Berlin on December 19, 1889, he worked in film and television, but his life also encompassed history, university teaching, revolutionary politics and public service. The result is a figure whose place on screen formed only one part of a much broader and more turbulent story. Following Germany’s defeat in 1918 and his demobilization from the army, Rosenberg joined the Independent Social Democratic Party. He moved to the Communist Party of Germany in 1920 and became an important theoretician for its dissident left wing. By 1924, he was among the leading figures of the party left in Berlin, had been elected to the KPD’s Central Committee and was serving within the Communist International. Rosenberg’s political path was shaped by the fierce factional struggles of the period. He maintained an ultra-left position even as his faction lost favor in Moscow, and although he was not expelled during the removal of other left-wing members, he left the KPD in April 1927. From there, the emphasis of his career shifted toward scholarship. He taught at the University of Berlin and headed the League of Rights of Man. That range of occupations makes Rosenberg an unusual presence in film history: an actor whose public life was equally defined by political argument, historical study and teaching. His later years were marked by persecution; because of his Jewish heritage, he became a refugee from the Nazis. He died in 1943.
