Armand Assante

Armand Assante has built a screen career around intensity, authority and a certain hard-to-read charm. Born in New York City on October 4, 1949, and raised in Cornwall, New York, the American actor is of Italian and Irish descent. His parents worked in the arts and education: his father was a painter and artist, while his mother was a music teacher, English teacher and poet. Assante became a familiar television presence during the 1970s through the NBC soap operas How to Survive a Marriage and The Doctors. His first visible film role came as Sylvester Stallone’s brother in Paradise Alley in 1978. He soon moved between very different kinds of parts, starring in the horror film Prophecy and gaining wider attention as Goldie Hawn’s French love interest in Private Benjamin. In Unfaithfully Yours, he played playboy violin virtuoso Maximillian Stein, showing a lighter side of the commanding presence that would define much of his work. Crime stories proved especially suited to Assante. He starred as private eye Mike Hammer in I, the Jury, played Roberto Texador in Sidney Lumet’s Q&A—a performance that brought him a Golden Globe nomination—and portrayed Bugsy Siegel in The Marrying Man. His performance as John Gotti in the 1996 television biopic Gotti earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie. Yet his career has never been confined to gangsters and tough men. Assante played Napoleon Bonaparte in Napoleon and Josephine: A Love Story, Odysseus in The Odyssey and Friedrich Nietzsche in When Nietzsche Wept. He was also a Cuban bandleader in The Mambo Kings, appeared opposite Stallone again in Judge Dredd, and later joined the cast of American Gangster. On television, he took a recurring role in NCIS as international arms dealer René Benoit. Across those parts, Assante’s strength has been his ability to make forceful characters feel poised rather than merely loud. Whether playing a detective, ruler, musician or crime boss, he brings the sense that the character is watching the room as closely as the audience is watching him.
