Arkie Whiteley

Arkie Whiteley was an Australian actress whose screen career moved easily between film and television. Born in London on 6 November 1964, she was the daughter of Australian artist Brett Whiteley and cultural figure Wendy Whiteley. Her childhood included an extraordinary brush with the creative life: while the family was living at New York’s Hotel Chelsea during her infancy, singer Janis Joplin was her babysitter. Whiteley was educated in Sydney, attending Ascham School, Cremorne Girls High and the Australian International School at North Ryde. Acting became her own path, with credits that placed her in several widely recognised Australian productions as well as later British film and television work. Her film appearances included Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and Razorback, two titles that gave her a place in the tougher, more unruly side of Australian cinema. She also appeared in A Town Like Alice, Princess Caraboo and The Last Musketeer, the latter alongside Robson Green. On television, Whiteley played Donna Mason, a troubled prostitute and drug user, in Prisoner. She was also seen in early episodes of A Country Practice and appeared in Gallowglass. That mix of projects suggests a performer comfortable moving between large-scale films, television drama and distinctive supporting roles. Rather than being confined to one kind of production, Whiteley built a varied body of screen work across Australia and abroad. Her connection to the arts extended beyond acting. Following Brett Whiteley’s overdose in 1992, she negotiated with the New South Wales government to purchase his former studio and operate it as a studio museum managed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. It was a meaningful act of preservation, linking her own creative life with the artistic legacy of her family. Whiteley died in 2001, leaving behind screen performances across some enduring Australian films and television series.
