Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin’s screen work was selective, but it drew on the same authority, timing and emotional directness that shaped her music. Born in Memphis on March 25, 1942, Franklin was a singer, songwriter and pianist whose career moved from gospel performance to soul, R&B and pop without losing its church-rooted power. After her family settled in Detroit, Franklin learned piano by ear and began singing solos at New Bethel Baptist Church. She recorded gospel music while still young, then moved to New York at 18 to pursue pop recording. Her early Columbia years placed her across jazz, blues, standards and rhythm and blues, but her move to Atlantic Records in 1966 brought her gospel background decisively to the foreground. “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You),” “Respect,” “Chain of Fools,” “Think” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” established a run of recordings built around both vocal force and interpretive control. Franklin’s best-known narrative-film appearance came in the 1980 musical comedy The Blues Brothers. Playing a soul food restaurant proprietor and the wife of Matt “Guitar” Murphy, she did not need to reshape herself into a conventional screen actor. The role instead made room for the commanding personality audiences already knew: grounded, funny and entirely in charge of the space around her. Another important part of her screen legacy is Amazing Grace. Franklin’s 1972 return to gospel was recorded live over two nights in a church, with the performances filmed by director Sydney Pollack. Technical and distribution complications delayed the concert film for decades, and it was finally released in November 2018. The footage preserves Franklin at the piano and among a congregation, bringing viewers close to the gospel foundation that remained central to her work. Franklin died in 2018, leaving a career that extended across recording, live performance, activism, production and a small but distinctive body of screen appearances.
