Archie Panjabi

Archie Panjabi has built a career around characters who seem to know more than they are saying. Whether working in comedy, political drama, crime television or science fiction, she brings a watchful intelligence to the screen, often finding the wit and tension inside supporting roles. Born in Edgware, London, on 31 May 1972, Panjabi graduated from Brunel University with a degree in management studies in 1994 and also trained in ballet. Her early film work included the 1999 comedy East Is East, followed by one of her most prominent big-screen roles in Bend It Like Beckham. In 2005, she made her Hollywood debut as a British diplomat in The Constant Gardener. Panjabi continued moving easily between tones and genres. She played the witty office colleague Gemma in Ridley Scott’s A Good Year, appeared as former Wall Street Journal reporter Asra Nomani in A Mighty Heart and took the role of Chandra Dawkin in the thriller Traitor. Her other screen work includes The Infidel, the BBC series Life on Mars and the crime drama The Fall, in which she played pathologist Tanya Reed Smith. Her defining television role came in 2009, when she joined The Good Wife as Kalinda Sharma. The performance earned Panjabi a Primetime Emmy Award, making her the first actor of Indian descent to win an Emmy. Kalinda’s combination of reserve, sharp humour and self-possession was particularly well matched to Panjabi’s ability to make stillness feel active. After leaving The Good Wife in 2015, she appeared in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Shetland and Blindspot. She later joined the third season of Snowpiercer and voiced Jedi Depa Billaba in the premiere of Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Panjabi also entered the world of Doctor Who as the newest incarnation of the Rani, extending a varied career shaped by intelligent, guarded characters and a screen presence that rarely needs to announce itself.
